Why Over-Modified ERPs Are Like Cars That Can’t Drive

Ever seen a car with so many mods it barely works? Massive wheels, too much weight, and gadgets everywhere. It looks cool but struggles to move. ERP systems can end up the same way when companies go overboard with customizations.

At first, it seems smart to tweak the ERP to fit every need. But the requests keep coming. Soon, the system is so customized that upgrading to a new version becomes a nightmare. Every change risks breaking something, and you’re stuck on an outdated version.

It doesn’t stop there. Over-customizing makes it harder to go live. Every tweak adds complexity—and cost. And often, these changes are unnecessary. They don’t make things faster or better; they just add headaches.

The costs add up quickly. Customizations need developers, testing, and maintenance. Before you know it, you’ve spent a fortune solving problems that didn’t really exist.

The takeaway? Keep it simple. Use the ERP’s built-in features and only customize when it’s essential. Don’t let your ERP become the car that looks good but can’t leave the driveway.
